Our new sister operation on the Middle Limay River
A Unique Fishing Experience on Argentina’s Premiere Tailwater Fishery
One of Northern Patagonia’s most remarkable trout streams, particularly for large fish, is the Rio Limay Medio (also know as the Middle Limay). This section of river – a tailwater that runs through many braided channels for over 50 miles – features cool, stable water releases that create a rich habitat for a large and healthy fish population. It also provides abundant nourishment for several species of large minnows that migrate out of the fertile Ezequiel Ramos Mejia Lake and up the river (adjacent to our ranch property) to spawn and become food that helps grow some massive trout. Migratory freshwater rainbows & German browns in the 30+ inch range do actually live here! And the year-round resident trout population runs from 16 – 25++ inches. This is a spectacular fishery located via paved highways just 3 hours from Patagonia River Ranch/San Martin de Los Andes, and 1.5 hours from Neuquén City.
The Guest Lodge at Estancia La Limay
Our guest lodge on Estancia La Limay was completely remodeled from the original main ranch house. As a result, the interior of the house is all new and extremely comfortable. We can accommodate 8 guests (4 bedrooms/4 baths) with 4 boats/day, making this a very exclusive experience.
Fishing at Estancia La Limay
The fishing operation on Estancia La Limay, a 16,000 acre property with significant river frontage on the Limay Medio, includes unique access points to many beautiful channels of this river system. Some channels are large and ideal for float fishing, while others are small and just right for wade fishing.
The Limay Medio begins below Pichi Picún Leufú Lake and runs for 50 miles before entering Ezequiel Ramos Mejia Lake, which is the Limay River system’s largest reservoir. Access on the upper 30 miles of river (just below the dam) is relatively limited, but access on the lower 20 miles (where our lodge is located) is all private, so seeing other boats and anglers on this part of the river is very rare. However, with our Estancia La Limay (which opened in December 2016), we have our own private access points to this lower section of the river.
Below us, the river channels continue for a few miles before emptying into the lake, where there is no easy access point off the lake. But we’re equipped with both drift boats and catarafts (with motors), so when fishing this bottom stretch, we can easily return our guests back upstream to our lodge at the end of their fishing day (or exit from a lake access). The lack of any public access points below our ranch makes this section of river and all its channels virtually private for our guests.
Logistics for Estancia La Limay
Our standard package is either a 4 day/4 night or 5 day/5 night stay. This season, our dates are November 5, 2017 to May 12, 2018. Please contact us for specifics on rates, availability, etc.
There’s several flights each day via Aerolineas Argentinas and LaTam between Buenos Aires and Neuquén City, which is an approximately 1.5 hour drive via paved highway to the Estancia. We will arrange transportation to/from the airport with a private driver. You can also fly into San Martin de los Andes (a 3 hour drive) or Bariloche (a 3 hour drive) and we will arrange transportation (quote available on request).
The Estancia La Limay fishing guide team is very excited to offer this new fishing opportunity to our guests. If you have an interest in adding on a stay to your week at Patagonia River Ranch, or want to book a separate trip to Estancia La Limay, please call or email us for more information.
